The Prophet Is Called November 1, 2026 1 Samuel 3:8–20

When God Calls, We Must Be Ready to Listen

The key verse is 1 Samuel 3:10 (KJV):

“And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

God wasn’t simply looking for someone who could speak for Him. He was calling someone willing to listen to Him.

Lesson Background and Summary

Samuel was a young boy serving in the house of the Lord under Eli the priest. His mother Hannah had dedicated him to God’s service.

During a time when the word of the Lord was precious, meaning divine revelation was uncommon, Samuel heard his name being called.

At first, he believed Eli was calling him. After repeated experiences, Eli realized that God was speaking to Samuel.

Eli instructed him how to respond.

When God called again, Samuel answered, “Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

God then revealed a difficult message concerning judgment upon Eli’s household. Although Samuel was afraid to deliver it, he faithfully told Eli what God had said.

By the end of the passage, Samuel was growing, the Lord was with him, and all Israel recognized that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord.

Five Powerful Points

1. God can call people at any age. Samuel was young, but God had a purpose for his life.

2. Spiritual guidance helps us recognize God’s direction. Eli had shortcomings, yet he helped Samuel understand how to respond to God’s call.

3. Listening must come before speaking. Samuel’s response demonstrates humility and readiness to receive God’s Word.

4. Obedience sometimes requires delivering difficult truths. Samuel’s first prophetic message was not easy, but he faithfully communicated it.

5. Faithfulness develops credibility. Samuel grew in his calling, and Israel came to recognize him as God’s prophet.
